Click here or on the picture to see a larger image.
Description – The focus of this class is on Elizabethan embroidery wrapped around the biography of Arbella Stuart. While listening to the Arbella lecture the students will stitch the class sampler, a 21st century interpretation of an Elizabethan sampler.
Arbella Stuart was a niece to Mary Queen of Scots, cousin to Elizabeth I, and Granddaughter of Elizabeth's friend and Mary's jailer Elizabeth Shrewsbury. Arbella left behind her letters which describe court life, education and her anxiety for her future.
The class will begin with a study of early samplers and motifs with an in depth study of the earliest known and dated English sampler, the Jane Bostock sampler of 1598. The class sampler is designed to reflect, but not duplicate Jane's sampler. The sampler is 9" X 12" on 34 count linen using silk threads, gold metal and glass beads for embellishment using Double Running, Detached Buttonhole, Trellis, Plaited Braid and Cross stitch variations and Or Nué.
The Elizabethan letter game, known as Ciphers, will be studied with each student designing their own cipher and including it on their sampler.
